MYOEFFECT AND OPEN BITE
What are Open Bites?
An Open Bite occurs when the front teeth cannot touch. Open Bites are either hereditary or can actually be caused by thumb sucking or tongue thrusts. When Open Bites are not hereditary, it occurs as a result of facial muscles squeezing the upper jaw bones. When combined with thumb sucking, this pushes the front of the upper jaw bones and teeth, causing them to tip up and move forward.
The MyoEffect treatment corrects the oral-facial muscle imbalance, which will widen the upper jaw and return it to its ideal position. It is ideal to treat Open Bites at ages 7-10. If needed, MyoEffect treatment will also include Myofunctional appliances and therapy to treat tongue thrusting. If treatment is delayed until the second molars emerge (ages 11-13), then treatment without surgery or molar extraction will be very difficult.
